"'Cocaine Romance' is a very modern take on gothic rock with a new wave tendency at its finest. Presented as the debut lead single from musician/songwriter Oliver Marson, this song packs a fine tuned dark pop essence, embelished by the catrinesque vocals and estupendous dark tone guitar melodies. The bridges also standout in terms of harmonies since they give the track a vanguardist, sometimes psychedelic rock mood to it. For a debut release, Oliver did prepare his high quality musical 'ammunition' in a very well tought manner and even when he mentions a lot of influences (some ovbious, some more obscure), we feel he offers something new and interesting to the table. Production and mixing are very well put together achieving a balance between a classic gothic rock and a more modernized new wave by today's standards. A very entertaining video also accompanies this release, we dare you to give this a listen, specially if you enjoy dark pop with more organic new wave roots. "

INSIDE THE TRACK: [artist's commentary]

I WROTE THIS TRACK WHEN I WAS KIND OF IN A GOTHIC MOOD DURING A COLD WINTER.
SOMEBODY I LIKED very much STARTED DATING A DRUG DEALER.
the frustration from that really drove me to write 'cocaine romance' (title taken form the russian novel).
the songs kind of got this campy vibe, which owes a lot to that very kitsch dracula film that francis ford coppola made, which shows love in a way thats both hilarious, tragic and ultimately messy (much like the film itself).

I INITIALLY RECORDED THE SONG AS A DEMO IN MY LIVING ROOM ON LOGIC PRO WITH MY PROPHET AND A YAMAHA RX5 DRUM MACHINE FROM THE 80s. i was full of self doubt during the process, but it was the belief that david leighton (producer, river run studios) that encouraged me really to go through with the track. once we were in the studio, we ended up having a lot of fun with the song. the prophet 08 is what i used to record the synth parts and also the arpeggiator throughout.

its a synth that has got a lot of power, its an aggressive piece of kit, but i love it and its what gives the track the emotion and powerful sound its got.
the drums were a mixture of the electronic drum samples and live drums that my friend joe stewart recorded, which i think really transformed the song.
